Note:

The Pastor is a member of the Elders board where this is referenced.

Purpose:
Deacons are servants who support the work of the church and the elders.
Deacons of PSC will touch people’s lives as Christ’s hands and feet, focusing mainly on the
areas of compassion, community, and stewardship.

Qualifications:
1 Timothy 3:8-12 [ESV] outlines the biblical qualifications for Deacons.
“8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[a] not addicted to much
wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear
conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they
prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise[b] must be dignified, not slanderers,
but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be the husband of one
wife, managing their children and their own households well.”
We also believe that the Board of Deacons consists of men and women, so we interpret scripture to apply to the spouse of a Deacon. It is not a position of
status to be elected by peers but of humble service to others by those responding to a call from
the Holy Spirit to use their Spiritual Gifts and talents to edify the church.
PSC is not seeking perfection in those desiring to serve as a Deacon, but a willingness to
strive for the following expectations, but not limited to:
 Spiritual maturity and growth, being an example of faithfulness for others.
 Being fully involved in the church and its ministries and actively attending.
 A commitment and desire to serve others with the time required.
 Deacons will be accountable to the church elders for direction.
 Commitment to serve for a designated term.

Key Tasks:
Deacons in Pure Springs Church come alongside the elders by helping with the church’s practical
and mercy-related needs. They will be charged with the following tasks based on their gifts and
talents. While the collective board will accomplish these tasks, it is not expected that each
individual serves in an area they are not gifted to do.
Mercy and Caring
o Making sure the church stays connected by personal contact
o Identifying and providing for needs of assistance
o Advocating for and seeking assistance for those in need
o Providing a point of contact for each member of the congregation
Conflict Resolution
o Being a visible point for the congregation to share troubles or concerns.
o Attempting to resolve minor issues.
o As a group, devising methods to allow people to share their struggles.
o Being aware of trouble spots within the church and identify solutions.
o Deciding which issues need to be elevated to the elders.
Finances
o The Deacons board will establish and maintain a “Deacons Fund” for meeting the
benevolent needs of the church through special collections or outside donations.
o Deacons will assist the finance team where appropriate.
Logistics
o Deacons, along with Chaplains, will assist with church services. Including but
not limited to ushering, offerings, communion, and special services.
Other
o Praying for members, leaders, and pastors.
o Spending time in the Word and growing in spiritual maturity.

Time Commitment:
The goal of PSC is to create an ongoing Deacons board, where people can rotate out to the other ministries as the Lord calls them. Deacons will be asked to serve for one to three years to allow for stability and consistency in the church.
Deacons will be asked to meet monthly to plan and discuss the needs and direction of the board.
Individual weekly commitment will be based on availability and giftedness.

Benefits of this position:
Serving in the role of deacon will likely be a challenge to grow in many ways, but you will be
blessed in abundance for your service to the Lord.
 Deeper relationships with those you serve and the congregation as a whole.
 Growth in your faith as you minister to others and trust in God to guide you.
 Expansion of the kingdom in big and small ways as you see the fruit of your labor.
 Comfort in knowing that you are part of God’s plan for building the church.
 Affirmation of your gifts as you step out in faith and trust God.
 Joy in seeing God at work through this ministry.
