If you feel this way, I must admit there was also a time when I did. Sunday was my time, and I had better things to do than spend it in church. After many years of this selfish thinking, I now understand that God desires us to journey through this life with fellow believers. Boa rightly states, “One of the primary purposes for believers to assemble together is to create a meaningful context in which they can mutually encourage and edify one another through the exercise of the spiritual gifts that have been given to the body.”[1] The Church is much more than an hour on Sunday.
The Church is God’s design for his entire body of believers. Each of us has been given unique gifts and talents that are intended to “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Eph 4:12). When we allow the Holy Spirit to work through us, this diversity adds fullness to our combined work. Boa reminds us, “In this world, we are part of a community of pilgrims who are traveling toward God, and we are meant to assist, nurture, and encourage one another along the way.”[2] If we think of church on Sunday as a family reunion, it gives us a different perspective.
Have a blessed week
