At Pure Springs Church, our goal is to expose the Word of God as it is revealed in the Bible. Many pastors today use snippets of Scripture to support their personal agendas. Ultimately, these preachers end up employing a method known as eisegesis in their studies. They read personal interpretations or preconceived notions into the text. This is probably most blatant with today’s prosperity gospel preachers. Focusing on the American culture of health, wealth, and happiness, they twist the Word of God for personal gluttony.
At Pure Springs, we interpret the Bible using a method called exegesis. This method involves analyzing the text within its original context, including the language, history, and cultural values of the time. Through this, we derive the intended meaning from the text itself. We seek to understand the message that God intended for the original audience and how it applies to our lives today.
In this blog, I will share some of my studies. I once heard Allistair Begg talk about the Bible’s perfection but the interpreters’ imperfection. This is true, but those who conduct their exegesis and study the works of respected scholars have a clearer view of what God is saying in His written Word. We are all called to study God’s Word, with the help of the Holy Spirit, and come to understand its truth (2 Tm 2:15). Our Statements of Faith identify where we find our inspiration: “We believe that the Bible was written by man through the divine inspiration of the Holy Spirit as the authoritative Word of God regarding Christian life and faith.” We primarily preach and teach by exposing the context of Scripture verse by verse. I hope that you find this information helpful on your journey to understanding.
Soli Deo Gloria
Pastor Michael
